Measure first. Compare with confidence.
A rug needs enough space for your furniture and enough room around its edges. Rug Fit Planner checks both using the measurements you enter. Its targets are adjustable planning preferences, not a guarantee that a rug will suit every room.
Start with the room and furniture
- Arrange the furniture where you intend to use it. Measure the room's width and length with a tape measure.
- Use width for the left-to-right direction on the plan and length for the top-to-bottom direction. Measure the furniture in those same directions.
- Choose the layout below and measure its complete furniture footprint. Include table leaves, a projecting bed frame, a chaise or separate chairs where applicable.
- Enter the space you want beyond the furniture and the exposed floor you want between every rug edge and the room boundary.
The plan represents a rectangular room, rectangular furniture footprint and rectangular rug. Alcoves, angled walls, door swings, vents and walking routes need a separate check in the room. The floor-border setting is a visual preference; it does not establish a suitable walkway or door clearance.
Before ordering, mark the selected rug outline with painter's tape and try the room as you use it. This follows Rugs USA's guidance to finalize the furniture arrangement, measure and tape out the rug area.
Dining: leave room for chairs
Measure the tabletop, including any leaves you plan to use. The rug stays centered on the table. The starting chair-clearance target is 24 inches beyond each of its four sides, with a 12-inch floor border. Both values can be changed.
Ruggable's dining guide recommends at least 24 inches beyond the table so pulled-out chairs can remain on the rug. Chair size and movement vary: check the furthest chair feet in their actual pulled-out position.
Minimum rug width = table width + twice the chair clearance.
Minimum rug length = table length + twice the chair clearance.
Living: cover the whole seating footprint
This layout assumes all legs are on the rug. Measure one outside rectangle around the entire seating group you want covered, including the sofa, chaise and any chairs. The rug is centered on that rectangle.
For an L-shaped sectional, the rectangle includes the empty space inside the L. The planner does not model the notch or infer where individual furniture legs sit. Its 12-inch example allowance adds space on all four sides of your measured rectangle; that amount is an editable preference.
Minimum rug width and length each equal the corresponding seating-footprint dimension plus twice your allowance. A front-legs-only arrangement is a different layout and is not calculated here.
Rugs Direct's living-room guide describes both front-leg and all-leg arrangements. Its sectional guide explains why the chaise and both branches matter. This planner uses the simpler, explicit whole-footprint arrangement.
Bedroom: the whole bed, with head edges aligned
Measure the bed frame's outer width and length, rather than relying on its mattress-size name. The rug is centered from left to right, and its head edge aligns with the head edge of the bed. The example adds 18 inches at both sides and the foot, with no extra allowance at the head.
Minimum rug width = bed-frame width + twice the allowance.
Minimum rug length = bed-frame length + the allowance.
A larger rug adds length at the foot; its head edge stays in place. Nightstands are not included. This is the planner's chosen layout, not a universal bedroom rule. It does not calculate a rug tucked under only the lower two-thirds of a bed.
Ruggable's bedroom guide suggests roughly 18–24 inches at the sides and foot and describes several placement options. Adjust the allowance to your room, then confirm the full outline in person.
Place the furniture where it really sits
Open Furniture position to move the footprint from the center of the room. Positive left/right values move it right; negative values move it left. Positive up/down values move it toward the bottom of the plan; negative values move it toward the top.
To calculate an offset, subtract the centered gap from your measured gap at the left or top edge:
Left/right offset = measured left gap − (room width − furniture width) ÷ 2.
Up/down offset = measured top gap − (room length − furniture length) ÷ 2.
The rug follows the layout's furniture placement. Moving furniture can make a previously suitable rug cross a room edge or leave too little floor border. The planner does not move your furniture automatically to make a rug fit.
How the size shortlist works
For each size, the planner checks both rug orientations while keeping the furniture fixed. An orientation meeting all your targets takes priority. If neither passes, the preview uses the orientation with the smaller total shortfall across furniture allowances and room borders. A tied result keeps the listed orientation. A smaller shortfall still means the rug fails at least one target.
Smallest fit means the smallest-area standard rug in the list that meets both furniture coverage and the floor border on every edge. It is not a judgment about which size looks best. When none passes, the planner says so; a displayed comparison is not a substitute recommendation.
A rug may be inside the room but miss your floor-border target. A negative floor border means it extends outside the room. A negative furniture clearance means the furniture extends past that rug edge.
Standard labels such as 8 × 10 feet are nominal. Check a product's actual dimensions under Check a rug's exact size. Custom sizes receive the same checks but do not replace the standard-size recommendation. Displayed measurements are rounded; the fit calculation keeps the underlying precision. One inch equals exactly 2.54 centimeters.
A dining example you can check by hand
Take a room 132 inches wide by 156 inches long, with a centered table measuring 42 by 72 inches. Choose 24 inches of chair clearance and a 12-inch floor border.
- The minimum rug rectangle is 90 × 120 inches: 42 + 48 across, and 72 + 48 down.
- An 8 × 10-foot rug measures 96 × 120 inches for this comparison.
- It extends 27 inches beyond each table side: (96 − 42) ÷ 2. At each end, it extends 24 inches: (120 − 72) ÷ 2.
- It leaves 18 inches of floor at every wall: (132 − 96) ÷ 2 across and (156 − 120) ÷ 2 down.
The rug meets both chosen targets and is the smallest listed standard that does. Confirm the seller's actual dimensions and test the chair movement before buying.
